Learning Opportunities and their Utilization in the Hungarian Prisons

by Attila Károly Molnár

For prisoners, learning in the prison can provide a great deal of help in planning the post-release phase of life and the success of labor market integration. For social reintegration, all forms of lifelong learning (formal, non-formal and informal learning) are needed in penitentiary institutions. 49.08% of the people in Hungary, after the release of their custodial sentences, commit a crime again and return to jail. One of the most important tools of social reintegration is prison education, which may help prisoners to reintegrate into society and, consequently, reduce the recidivism. Our research conducted in three Hungarian prisons (Balassagyarmat Strict and Medium Prison, Vác Strict and Medium Prison and Győr-Moson-Sopron County Remand Prison) wanted to find the answer to the question, which are the special features of the prisoners' knowledge process. The aim is to explore the possibilities for prisoners in various areas of learning and to gather information on the prisoners' learning motivation.
