ANDRAGOGICAL TOOLS FOR THE REINTEGRATION OF CONVICTED PEOPLE

Spring Wind 2016 Study Book

The penitentiary institutions in Hungary operate with very high saturation. Repeated crime rates among those already finished sentence are nearly 50%, so the increasing number of inmate population raises the problem of change. The developments in the prison case suggest that the organization is open to new ways supporting reintegration. As an Andragogue, I do not see the solution in increasing the number of inmates' places but in the prevention of re-imprisonment. The question arises as to whether the methods developed by andragogy can be applied to the prisons. With my field research, I approach to the re-socialization of inmates with the ideology of life-help andragogy, which through self-development helps to find the right way to return to society. My empirical research was carried out at the Balassagyarmat Prison with a group of prisoners of 20. With the regular visit and personal contact, I was looking for the answer whether the group members' would be able to carry out personal development exercises as self-help and, if so, what results they would do. The training-like sessions held in 2013 and 2014, were based on conversations, which through the positive influence of personality led to to the work to be done: to understand and learn the basics of some self-developing mental practices. The results of the exercises of relaxation and meditation have made it clear that it is desirable to work in this direction to shape the mindset of prisoners. Vulnerable examiners of the method, without exception, provided positive feedback on the effect of relaxation and meditation on them - the week-to-week sessions were very appealing to them. During my research, I was convinced that the regular meditation of inmates in prisons could be a good method of personal development and criminal andragogy will have a new opportunity for the resocialization process of prisoners.
